Does your house have an abundance of building toys? We have Mega Blocks, wooden blocks, stackaroos, and foam blocks-- and I know this list is mild compared to what many others have! Blocks are a great open ended material that can be used for pretend play (see our Block Soup), engineering activities (see our Salt Dough and Blocks activity) and so much more. Today, we used our blocks in a measuring activity!
We used our Mega Blocks first to make a tall tower (or "skyscraper" of your little one is learning new vocabulary). I already had our "measuring tape" stuck on the wall (it is literally tape- it sticks to the wall so there's no need to hold a yard stick and risk breaking the tower! SO cool!).
Even though my little man can't read the numbers on the measuring tape yet, it was a great learning opportunity to see how measurements are used. We incorporated great vocabulary like tall/taller, skyscraper, less/more, etc. This would even be a great opportunity to organize and stack blocks by color to make it look like a bar graph!
The next type of blocks we used were wooden blocks. After it was built and measured, it was quickly demolished! :-)
Other items we used to measure were foam blocks and even unconventional building materials like stacks of books! What else could you think to measure?
Do you have the Duct Measuring Tape yet? Head over to Amazon to pick it up before your next building activity!
